I’ll drink to that! With Rachel Brosnahan

3 Dec

Welcome to “I’ll Drink To That” Ruby’s conversations with the future leaders of Broadway and beyond! Showbiz is in good hands with these brilliant and inspiring professionals.

Ruby sits down for a drink with the fabulous Rachel Brosnahan!

If you were actually meeting with Ruby in person, what would you drink and where?
Well, I’m on a bit if a health kick at the moment so I would probably take her to Cafe Grumpy for some amazing Chai Lattes…you can “drink to that” right?

What is your current job title?
Stage, film, and TV actress.

Whose career do you aspire to have?
Jessica Chastain! She’s amazing–she transitions so seamlessly between theatre and film. Plus she is quickly becoming a style icon in her own right while still managing to stay out of the tabloids. I am completely in awe of her and would love to play every role she’s ever had.

What’s one of your most embarrassing theater memories?
In 2009, I was doing a play called Up at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. I played a pregnant sixteen year-old and, after some convincing on my part (“it will add to the rebellious nature of the character!”), the team let me keep my nose piercing in for the duration of the show. At the top of Act II, I had this big emotional scene where I talked about my baby’s daddy and the likes…and during one of our shows the stud started coming out in the middle of the scene. I didn’t want to lose it, so I casually tried to push it back in while crying about my baby’s daddy. After the show, the stage manager came up to me and was like, “In the future, you might want to wait until you get offstage to pick your nose.” We had a full house that night so I’m sure everyone thought the same thing! Needless to say, I no longer have my nose pierced.

What’s one of your best theater memories?
In middle school, my class went to see a production of Les Miserables in Chicago. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It’s the first time I can remember being totally swept away like that. I think that’s when I caught the bug.

What book are you reading right now?
The Winter of our Discontent by John Steinbeck. I’ve never read it but its been on my list forever! I really love it so far.

What book would you like to see made into a musical?
Totally kidding! Oh wow, please no. The Great Gatsby maybe? Or The Giver.

What is your current theatrical project?
I’m making my Broadway debut early next year! Be on the lookout!

What show are you currently recommending?
Still stuck on Once. I’ve heard so many people say they weren’t musical fans until they saw this show. That’s really exciting.

What is one of your most prized theater possessions?
I have this amazing vintage Les Miserables poster that my dad found at an estate sale when I was in middle school. It reminds me of my best theater memory and is still hanging in my room in Chicago.

Where do you keep your Playbills?
They’re all in binders at my parents’ house. Until I stop moving around so much, I want to keep them in a safe place!
